Ballroom and Latin
Ballroom and Latin are the two main categories within ballroom dancing. Ballroom dances are characterised by elegant, flowing movements, while Latin dances are more energetic and rhythmical. The music differs greatly per dance and defines both tempo and character. These playlists give you a clear understanding of both styles.
Waltz
The Waltz, also known as the English Waltz or slow Waltz, is a calm and elegant dance with smooth, flowing movements. The music has a clear 3/4 rhythm and a romantic character, making it ideal for practising balance, timing and fluidity.
Tango
The Tango is a powerful and expressive ballroom dance with sharp accents and strong rhythmical structure. The music is recognisable by its staccato character and dramatic atmosphere. Tango music requires precision, control and musical awareness.
Viennese Waltz
The Viennese Waltz is faster than the English Waltz and is danced to classical waltz music at a high tempo. It is known for its continuous turning movements and flowing motion across the dance floor. The music helps develop stamina and rhythmic awareness.
Slow Foxtrot
The Slow Foxtrot is an elegant and technically refined dance. The music is calm with a jazzy character, allowing for smooth and controlled movement. It is perfect for practising timing, balance and seamless transitions.
Foxtrot
The Foxtrot is an elegant ballroom dance that is essentially a slower variation of the Quickstep. The steps follow the same rhythm as the Quickstep but are performed in a smoother and more controlled way. Unlike the Slow Foxtrot, it has little in common with that style; it is a distinct ballroom dance with a moderate tempo and gliding movements.
Quickstep
The Quickstep is a cheerful, fast ballroom dance full of energy and playfulness. The music has a high tempo and a light character, encouraging movement and making it ideal for training dynamics and rhythm.
Samba
The Samba is a lively Latin dance with a distinctive rhythm and high energy. The music is joyful, swinging and instantly inviting to move. Samba music helps train timing, bounce and rhythmic variation.
Cha-Cha
The Cha Cha is playful, sharp and rhythmical. The music has a clear tempo and strong accents, making the dance feel lively and dynamic. Cha Cha music is ideal for practising rhythm and expression.
Rumba
The Rumba is a slow and expressive Latin dance. The music is romantic and sensual, offering plenty of space for interpretation and feeling. Rumba music helps develop control, balance and musicality.
Paso Doble
The Paso Doble is a powerful and theatrical dance with a strong march-like rhythm. The music is dramatic and instantly recognisable, inspired by Spanish tradition. It is ideal for practising strength, posture and timing.
Jive
The Jive is a fast and energetic dance influenced by swing and rock ’n’ roll. The music is upbeat, fast and rhythmical. Jive music brings high energy and is perfect for training stamina and rhythm.
Solo Latin
Solo Latin is danced individually and combines technique, rhythm and expression. The music is energetic and rhythmic, helping develop body control and musicality. It is suitable for anyone who enjoys dancing actively to Latin beats.
